Teutopolis State Bank opened its doors on August 1, 1905. Through the efforts of community members H.H. Hardiek, Barney Niemeyer, John L. Runde, J. H. Uptmor, H.J. Weber, and B. H. Wernsing, banking in Teutopolis was established. Originally named Bank of Teutopolis, the institution was reorganized in October of 1913 as Teutopolis State Bank, a state-chartered bank. The bank has seen three different locations in Teutopolis since it was first founded in 1905. Currently, Teutopolis State Bank is located at 106 East Main Street. In 1997, a second banking facility, Sigel Community Bank, was erected in Sigel, Illinois and in 2017, Bank of Teutopolis in Effingham opened. Even though the home of Teutopolis State Bank has shifted and changed, the mission has always stayed the same. “Our mission has always been to best serve our customers and this meant opening bank locations where our customers lived.” Tells Hank Koester, President of Teutopolis State Bank. Koester, like many of his colleagues, lives in Teutopolis and has early memories of his experiences at Teutopolis State Bank. “I remember going to the bank which at the time, was in operation directly across the street from our Teutopolis location now. My dad, Ron Koester was one of five employees at the time and now is the Chairman of the Board.” Recalls Koester. The relationships fostered through the hard work of the employees have created a friendly banking experience that customers are sure to recognize. “We are very customer service driven and we pride ourselves on the fact that our employees know most, if not all our customers by name. The atmosphere and the dedication of our employees is truly something special.” Explains Koester. It’s because of these relationships Teutopolis State Bank is eager and enjoys giving back to local non-profit organizations. Schools, churches, park districts, hospitals, and businesses throughout Teutopolis, Sigel, and Effingham have benefited from the generosity of Teutopolis State Bank and its employees and personnel. This commitment to the community is a standard at Teutopolis State Bank and will continue to be for years to come.
