Position Title: Police Deputy

SUMMARY
This position performs tasks related to enforcing Federal, State, and local laws, protecting the public, preserving public peace and order, and control and direction of vehicular traffic. Police officers detect and prevent crime and complete assignments from the police chief.
DUTIES
1. Patrols in assigned neighborhoods on a daily basis.
2. Answers calls for assistance and responds in an appropriate manner based on the nature of the request.
3.Identifies crime and disorder related problems and analyzes issues to develop responses that eliminate or minimize the problem.
4. Investigates complaints of family disputes and public disturbances and restores or maintains order.
5. Builds positive relationships with community members by responding to and resolving difficult or sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
6. Serves as a public relations liaison between citizens and the Police Department and communicates frequently with citizens in assigned areas to get information and evidence regarding problems and concerns.
7. Attends neighborhood association, school, and other organizational meetings to answer questions and provide information relating to police events and departmental responses.
8. Provides crowd control assistance during special events.
9. Assists citizens in finding solutions to problems and advises them on crime prevention and self-protection methods.
10. Collaborates with other governmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals to resolve problems.
11. Directs traffic under emergency conditions and reports hazardous roadway conditions and defective traffic control equipment to the proper departments.
12. Administers field tests for suspected intoxication and issues traffic citations as needed.
13. Interviews victims and others involved in traffic accidents, collects evidence regarding accidents, and completes accident reports.
14. Completes all required reports and forms.
15. Provides information to assist with criminal investigation by other agencies.
16. Attends related training classes and schools.
17. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Police Chief.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ability to make sound judgment, have integrity and a commitment to ethical conduct.
2. High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or similar area of study preferred.
3. Completed training from a recognized police academy and valid Illinois law enforcement certification required.
4. Demonstrates expertise in using police equipment.
5. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
6. Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
7. Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs.
8. Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs.
SCHEDULING
The normal working hours for this position will vary based on scheduling. Overtime is required when requested.
