Position Title: Water & Wastewater Maintenance Technician
Department: Public Works
Reports to: Village Foreman
FLSA Class: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY
The Water & Wastewater Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the Village’s water and wastewater systems to ensure safe, reliable service for the community. This is a skilled, hands-on role that requires attention to detail, strong work ethic, and a commitment to doing the job right.
This position is best suited for someone who is dependable, takes ownership of their work, and understands the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure.
DUTIES
- Maintain, repair, and operate water distribution and wastewater collection systems
- Assist with installation, inspection, and repair of mains, hydrants, valves, and sewer lines
- Monitor system performance and address issues in a timely manner
- Operate equipment and vehicles used in maintenance and repair work
- Respond to service calls, emergencies, and system issues as needed
- Follow all safety procedures and actively participate in required safety training
- Maintain required licenses and certifications and stay current with safety and regulatory requirements
- Keep accurate records and complete basic reporting related to maintenance, inspections, and compliance
- Assist with other public works and maintenance activities as needed
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and safety sessions
- Work efficiently with the team to complete projects correctly and on time
- Interact with residents in a professional and respectful manner
QUALIFICATIONS
We’re looking for someone who can work independently, follow through on responsibilities, and contribute to a team that takes pride in maintaining the Village.
- Experience in water, wastewater, utilities, construction, or a related field is strongly preferred
- Proven reliability and consistent attendance
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field
- Willingness to learn, but also the ability to step in and contribute without constant direction
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Basic email and computer skills for completing reports, logs, and required documentation
REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required
- Must have one of the following OR the ability to obtain within 2 to 4 years:
- Illinois Class B Water Operator Certification
- Illinois Class 4 Wastewater Operator Certification
Preference will be given to candidates who already hold one or both certifications.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, digging, and operating equipment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Willingness to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs when needed
SCHEDULING
Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the summer)
Hours may vary depending on system needs, emergencies, and seasonal demands.
